In 2021, the Yankees were open for business. They demonstrated a willingness to trade from what was viewed as a deep prospect base to try to fix defects with the major league roster.
They have dealt 22 prospects since last January. That included 12 in trades with the Pirates for Jameson Taillon, the Rangers for Joey Gallo, the Cubs for Anthony Rizzo and the Angels for Andrew Heaney. The dozen each rank among their new teams’ top 30 prospects, as assembled by MLB.com.
The list of 22 does not include more experienced players such as Thairo Estrada, Mike Ford, Nick Nelson and Tyler Wade being traded or Clint Frazier being released as part of a general 40-man roster cleanup, which also included the departures of Mike Tauchman and Andrew Velazquez.
This has cut into their organizational depth. Yet the Yankees have at least as many major league holes to address when the lockout ends as they did at any point in the last year. They do not have a shortstop or a first baseman, and would like to upgrade at catcher, center field and in the rotation.
