Grading the Jets’ 30-9 loss to the Saints at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
Offense
It was another pathetic display from this group. The Jets ended the game with 256 yards, but plenty of that came in garbage time. They only had 125 after three quarters. QB Zach Wilson (19 of 42, 202 yards, 59.8 rating) was all over the place with his throws. He bounced a few, sailed a few and had another inaccurate day. The Jets played shorthanded with injuries to several key players and the backups did not step up. RB Ty Johnson dropped three passes early. WR Denzel Mims committed consecutive penalties to kill a drive at the end of the first half and had no catches in the game.
Grade: F
Defense
It was not hard to figure out what the Saints were going to do, but they were still able to do it. The Saints ran for 203 yards on the Jets’ defense, with Alvin Kamara (27 carries for 120 yards and 1 TD) leading the way. QB Taysom Hill (15 of 21, 175 passing yards, 96.3 rating, 11 rushes, 73 yards, 2 TDs) was playing with an injured middle finger on his throwing hand and the Saints leaned on the run game. Hill did enough to beat the Jets, including a 44-yard touchdown run to punctuate the loss.
Grade: D
Special Teams
Hey, at least the Jets found a kicker. Eddy Pineiro made all three of his field-goal attempts in his first game with the team. That was one bright spot in this one. Justin Hardee got flagged for a questionable catch interference call. Punter Braden Mann nailed a few nice punts, including a 60-yarder, on a day when he was very active.
Grade: B-
Coaching
This loss was not because of coaching. The Jets simply did not have enough talent on the field and key players did not play well. That being said, Robert Saleh mismanaged the end of the first half and ended up going to the locker room with a timeout in his pocket. The defense also seemed unable to stop a simple attack from the Saints with no answers for Kamara. It is not Mike LaFleur’s fault that Wilson was bouncing passes.
