Justin Herbert dig ‘taken out of context’

Patrick Mahomes is backtracking on his recent comments about Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

During the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament this past weekend in Lake Tahoe, a fan advised Mahomes to “watch out for Justin Herbert next year.”

In response, Mahomes clapped back, saying “I’ll see it when I believe it,” a remark he insists waas merely playful banter.

“Yeah, I think it got taken out of context,” Mahomes told USA Today on Tuesday. “I was talking some trash to all those Raiders and Broncos and Chargers fans out there. I have a ton of respect for [Herbert] as a player.”

Herbert established himself as the Chargers’ franchise quarterback with an impressive rookie season last year. In 15 starts, he threw for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

Herbert drew his first NFL start against the Chiefs and kept pace with Mahomes, finishing with 311 yards and two total touchdowns in an overtime loss. In Week 17, Herbert torched Kansas City again, recording 302 yards and four total touchdowns while Mahomes rested ahead of the postseason.

“For him to come out in year one and play at that level is a special thing,” Mahomes, who spent his rookie season as a backup, said. “Not a lot of guys can do it. And I know I’ll have a lot of tough games against him in the future. So it was kind of a joking matter that I think blew up on Twitter like most things do.”

The Chargers helped make sure the comments didn’t go unnoticed by trolling Mahomes on Twitter.

The two quarterbacks will next square off in September in Week 2 of the upcoming NFL season.
