Lions draft picks 2021: When does Detroit choose? Full list of nfl draft selections

The Matthew Stafford era has ended with the Detroit Lions. After 12 years with the Lions, Stafford was awarded to Jared Goff and the Ram of Los Angeles in exchange for some future first-round picks. Under coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, Detroit will try to rebuild.

With the seventh overall pick, the Lions are a good place to land an impact play. They probably won’t opt for a quarterback after acquiring Goff, so they can go there with a top receiver or look at one of the best defenders in the entire draft. It all depends on what Campbell and Holmes envision for the team.

The Matt Patricia-era Lions already had some talented players on the roster, so Campbell has a few pieces to work with. Complementing him will be key to making the most of his first season with the Lions. And on offense, they need to make sure that Goff is surrounded by talent. Otherwise, he may have a lot of trouble as a starter.

Lions need NFL draft

  • Wide receiver: The Lions allowed Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones to run in free agency, replacing Braced Perriman and Title Williams. Both are good deep threats, but the Lions need help in the slot and could use a true No. 1 receiver as Perriman and Williams would be best as secondary and tertiary options.
  • Quarterback: Sean McVay wants to upgrade Jared Goff which is not good for the quarterback’s future. Goff is still young enough to pan out, but adding another young passer in the mid-round of the draft to compete with him would be a sensible move.
  • Defensive line: Retaining Romeo Okvara after the 10-sack season was a good move by the Lions, but they needed more depth behind him and Trey Flower. It also wouldn’t hurt him to find a better starting option next to Michael Brokers than John Penicini.
  • Cornerback: The Lions have first-round pick Jeff Okudah as a 2020 first-round pick, but they cut out Desmond Truffant and Justin Coleman, their two starters from last year. He would need someone to compete for those two jobs alongside Amani Oruveri and Mike Ford.
  • Linebacker: Lions need upgrades to all three levels of their defense. He signed Alex Ezalon to compete with Jamie Collins and Jahlani Tawai for game time, but adding a top lineback prospect to push the 31-year-old Collins and the tot-injured Angelon would be a good move.
