Before the Patriots kicked off against the Bills in snowy and wind-stricken Buffalo on Monday, internet detectives speculated that quarterback Mac Jones may have mimicked a certain New England great in the cold-weather wardrobe department.
But as the 23-year-old rookie explained Wednesday, unlike Tom Brady, he didn’t have a scuba suit under his uniform.
“No. I just had my normal dress on,” Jones said, according to Patriots.com. “I’ve been listening to Brian [Hoyer]’s advice and all that. You have to get what you have to get on and go out there and play. You want to be warm. Like I said, it’s a learning experience. At the end of the day, none of that stuff matters. You’ve just got to go out and play what you’re comfortable in.”
Jones, in his “Monday Night Football” debut, completed two of three passes for 19 yards. Relying heavily on the run game — 46 carries for 222 yards, to be exact — the Patriots defeated the Bills, 14-10, and are the top seed in the AFC.
Brady, who is now playing in much warmer temperatures in Tampa Bay, previously wore wetsuits for bitterly cold games, including a 2017 matchup against the Jets.
“I’ve been wearing it at practice,” Brady told ESPN at the time. “It just insulates you from the cold. It’s good because it keeps the wind from penetrating and it really doesn’t limit movement too much.”
Should the temperature fall below freezing in either of the Patriots’ final two home games of the regular season, perhaps Jones will consider giving Brady’s method a whirl.
