Maryland romped to a 54-10 win over Virginia Tech in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.
Taulia Tagovailoa completed 20 of 24 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 42 yards. Darryl Jones, who hadn’t scored in four seasons at Maryland, caught a 70-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and a 32-yard touchdown on fourth down in the third quarter. Tarheeb Still opened the scoring with a 92-yard punt return, a Terrapin record. The defense also got in on the action, with Greg Rose recovering a fumble and taking it 11 yards for a score after Nick Cross sacked VT quarterback Connor Blumrick.
The victory marked Maryland’s first bowl win since 2010, a 51-20 win over East Carolina in the Military Bowl. Virginia Tech has now lost its last four bowl games. The Hokies have been bowl-eligible for 29 straight seasons, the longest streak in the nation. VT lost two of three games under interim coach J.C. Price after firing Justin Fuente.
The attendance for Wednesday’s game was 29,653, a low for the bowl game which started in 2010. The game was canceled last year due to COVID-19.
