An upstate attorney looking to replace Rep. Elise Stefanik in Congress may have already jumped the shark.
Matt Putorti, a Democratic lawyer from Whitehall, came in for mockery online when he blasted his GOP rival for not focusing on the needs of “everyday New Yorkians.”
Empire State residents have been known as “New Yorkers” since at least the mid-1800s and that has long been the preferred demonym of choice for residents, according to a Google N-gram analysis. New Yorker is also the official term used by the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual.
“My fellow New Yorkians… Said by no one, ever. Until today,” Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro joked on Twitter.
“A ‘New Yorkian’, what? Is that a cross between a person who lives in New York and a Yorki Terrier? Was that developed in Wuhan, China, too?” added another user
.
One observer wondered if the term referred to a Big Apple resident/Martian hybrid.
The post was swiftly deleted and Putorti reposted his message using the correct term, but not before eagle-eyed Twitter users could take screengrabs which will now live forever.
Stefanik shared her own mocking post, saying Santa has come early to her district.
“Merry Christmas New YorkERS!” she said in a post sharing an image of herself with husband Matthew Manda and their 2-month old son Sam.
Stefanik, the House GOP Conference chairwoman, will face voters again in the 2022 midterms.
Putorti did not respond to a request for comment from The Post.
