Brits dying from Covid-19 are begging to have their vaccines when it’s too late, a doctor has warned.
Vaccines are the best way to protect people from severe Covid, which could put them in hospital and in many cases, lead to death.
Intensive care consultant Dr. Tom Lawton, of Bradford Royal Infirmary, described his patients’ desperation to get the jab – once they have already been hospitalized with the virus and it’s too late.
Dr. Lawton urged people to come forward for their booster vaccines in order to beat Omicron – with all Brits invited to get a third jab by the end of December.
“We’ve had an awful lot of unvaccinated people coming through ICU with very severe Covid-19,” Dr Lawton said.
“One of the hardest things for me to deal with has been people begging to be vaccinated at the point, when it is unfortunately too late, when they have already contracted Covid-19.”
Speaking to Yorkshire Live, Dr Lawton said that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is dangerous, due to the fact that it can pass through people who have already been infected and those who have been double jabbed.
He added: “Now those people hopefully won’t be so sick with Covid, but they can transmit it to other people who haven’t had that protection.
“That means that if you haven’t been vaccinated, you will come into contact with Omicron and you could well get very, very unwell with it.”
A booster shot is the best protection against Omicron, with early data suggesting it pushes efficacy back up to 75 per cent.
Dr Jenny Harries, UKHSA Chief Executive said: “Once again, we urge everyone who is able to get a booster jab to come forward and do so. It is the best defense we have against this highly transmissible new variant.”
A new mom recently urged pregnant women to get their vaccines after she had to give birth to her baby in a coma.
Families who have lost relatives who have refused to get jabbed have also urged others to come forward for the vaccines.
It was also reported that the first Omicron victim had been an ‘unvaccinated conspiracy theorist’.
Dr. Lawton’s comments come as another top NHS doctor warned that hospitalizations will spread across the country.
Daily toll
The latest data shows that the Omicron death toll has risen to 12, with 104 patients in hospital with the variant.
Covid daily cases soared past 90,000 again yesterday, as Brits are urged to get boosters amid Christmas restriction fears.
Infections in the country have risen by 91,743 in the last 24 hours, with 44 new fatalities from the virus.
The country has now got 45,145 Omicron infections, with a rise of 8,044 today.
Recently daily deaths have been around 100 on average, and as of December 13, 900 patients a day were admitted to the hospital with the virus.
Professor Rupert Pearse, an intensive care doctor in London said the Omicron wave of hospital admissions has begun in London and will spread across the UK.
Prof Pearse said: “If you look at UK-wide figures you can’t see an uptick in hospital admissions just yet. But we know it’s coming and it will spread across the country.
“Between 80 and 90 per cent of patients that we have are unvaccinated. It’s very sad that people are vaccine hesitant.
“There’s absolutely no doubt that it’s protecting the population.”
Experts said they will be ‘looking closely’ at the data in the coming days to determine what action will be taken to avoid putting more pressure on the NHS.
