When you’re a jet, you’re a jet, from your first teaser trailer to the day of your December release!
The first glimpse of scenes from the new adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s musical “West Side Story” fell during the 2021 Oscars Sunday night. It suggested making a faithful remake of the 1957 musical film by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim.
A nice touch was the original screen Anita – actress Rita Moreno, now 89 – sings the iconic song “Somewhere” on the action.
We see Ansel Elgort’s Tony Spot Rachel Zegler’s Maria during “Dance in the Gym”; Sharks collide with jets in the street and parking lots; And enthusiastic teens dance through the streets of the Manhattan neighborhood where the Lincoln Center now stands.
The Broadway musical lost the famous musical Tony Award “The Music Man”, but Oscar loved the film adaptation of Robert Wise, giving it the Best Picture Award in 1962.
A less-traditional version of the musical directed by Ivo Van Howe opened at Broadway Theater last year on Broadway.
“West Side Story” will hit theaters on December 10.
