New York Attorney General candidate Zephyr Teachout announced she has suspended her campaign after current AG Letitia James announced she had ended her gubernatorial campaign and will instead seek reelection.
Teachout called James “an exceptional leader” in a statement on Sunday announcing that her AG campaign would be put on hold, throwing her support behind the incumbent.
“Our campaign for NY Attorney General has always been rooted in doing the best for New Yorkers,” she tweeted. “Attorney General Letitia James is an exceptional leader and dedicated public servant. Given her decision to seek re-election, I will be immediately suspending my own campaign.
“I strongly support Attorney General James in her re-election and her critical fights to deliver justice for the people of New York.
Teachout, a Fordham University law professor, had lost the Democratic primary for Attorney General to James in 2018. The progressive also ran and lost against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the 2014 Democratic primary for governor.
